The new criminal justice act has many people fearing the worst. Part of that fear is, according to some, that the garda superintendant who approves your firearms cert has power to demand you employ any security measure he see's fit.
That's as far as the act, in this instance. goes, but of course you can read as much as you like into it. The clause was amended in the first place to give the gardai actual power in law to insist on a gunsafe, which was something they tried to do a few years previously but were prevented by doing so. The NARGC took them to courst and proved that the requirement and it's implications (coppers coming into your house to inspect the cabinet without a warrant) had no standing in current law.
So this time around the gardai made sure they had it all square and legal. The fact that the wording is very generic means that it could mean that more stringent measures of security, such as a monitored alarm, may be demanded by the gardai and you'll just have to do it or not have your guns licenced.
To date, the only people I know that have had to install a monitored alarm are those who have licenced pistols.
In my opinion I do not think that this will be foisted on all gun owners.
