There is definitely a problem with Irish Law and the Dept of Justice
The DoJ has its own take on the law which seems to have nothing to do with the Irish statute book which is by nature the only law that the courts consider.
Cheers, Ivan. As it happens, I've just reapplied for my usual licence - it being that time of year again. I don't foresee any problems with that as it's been fine for two so far.
Things might become a bit more interesting though when, in due course, I ask for a .223 to replace the .22 Hornet I currently have.
I used to read a lot about all this on the big Irish board. Those guys could out talk a good, American attorney! Only so much in depth navel gazing did my head in, in the end. Gist of it does appear to be though that ye quite right in ye own assertion. Only a judge or two has kicked the Superintendents personal views back into touch.
Last I knew then, according to the courts; If ye considered fit to hold a gun, it really doesn't matter what sort of gun it is. Nice. But, of course, that just means they'll dig that little bit harder to find a reason to claim ye unfit in the first place. Like; How many visits to the pub or how many pints a week makes one Not of sober character, or how ever they couch the terms for being a piss head?
Authority never likes cut and dried, does it. Unless it's Their cut and dried.
I don't bother with that Boards.ie nonsense, 'though there is someone who posts there using the same online name as myself, but it ain't me.
They talk everything to fecking death, to no avail, and have the largest collection of pompous prigged up talk-shop loving pedants this side of the atlantic.
Go ahead with your caliber change and see how it goes. It'd be nice if the law was exactly as wrote, but hey, there is for and against that in every sense and aspect of the law.
Macnas, My Man! SO good to see ye round again, mate. God, I wish it wasn't so far between us. I'd love a chat. But ye quite right; Having been on the train up from just Dublin ..... F*ck me!
Anyway, the situation is fluid. I ran this whole idea past my mate Dean O'. He went all tight lipped on me and started responding to everything I was saying with, " Mmmmm ..... ". I'm straight. So I pulled him over the " Mmmm " shit. Here's the (updated and revised) craic:
See; I have this guy wanting me to come thin out some deer on his ground. I'm figuring these'll be Fallow or Red. Thus I started thinking .243 sort of thoughts. Me knowing nothing much about deer or even calibres. I just treat Any gun as a shit load of grief, waiting for me to fire it under the wrong circumstances. Thus I aim to drop my target. Not drop myself in it.
Now; Aren't we talking more like the .308, for big, serious deer like Red and Fallow? That's a calibre Dean only talks of in hushed and reverent tones. Hell, to me? It's just another tool to do my job with. Drop the target. I don't get excited about 'how big my gun is'.
Dean's answer, once pulled, was ~ bearing in mind I was still pondering the .243 then ~ that I might throw in the Hornet for a Magnum. (Suits me fine. I can get a much, Much nicer Mag' And spend shit loads less on ammo. Still suit me fine for the sort of regular work I do).
Then, he suggests, I should leave it while that sinks in. Then put in for the .243. Idea being that I won't be wanting two Centrefires at one time.
But that's Dean O'. He's simply obsessed with guns. Me? I see it as owning a chain saw and a sthil saw. Just tools for my jobs.
Sooooo ..... What's the craic now, gents? I'd be quite content to chuck " The Pig " in for a nice, light, black synthetic Remmi .22 Mag.
But I'm now looking at what calibre I'm allowed to use on up to Red Deer. What's the least, please? I won't be trying for any speck in the distance shots! Not that that makes any difference to what they say we can use.
Also, what about a Deer Licence?
Sorry if these may sound like naive questions. Only I'm not native and I've never been asked to pursue deer before.
Incidentally; My third (Unconditional) licence is right here beside me!
Ditch, if you ever make your way down to Cork, let me know.
Before I talk about calibres, I think its best to state that deer, whilst they can be a particular pest to farmers, are not classed as vermin and have defined seasons.
You need a separate permit (section 42) to hunt deer, this can be used where you are acting as an agent for a farmer shooting them off land to protect crops, young forestry and property.
Up to a few years ago the 22-250 was the only calibre you could legally use, a light weight varmint round. It’s different now thankfully.
These days guys are using everything up to .300 winchester magnums, but theres no need to go that far.
Red deer can be cleanly killed with well placed .243 ammunition, and this will do for fallow and sika as well.
If I had my choice, I'd use 6.5x55, it has a bit more uumpph and is very flat shooting, i.e. it doesn't have the ballistic curve of a thrown house brick, as does say, the .303.
So, don't sweat the calibre so much, anything over and including .243 will do the job as long as you do your job properly back at the end of the thing that goes bang. Bullet placement is all important, judging whether or not the shot will be a good enough one to kill the beast cleanly is as important.
Gut shot deer will travel long distances and die in pain before you ever find them to fix your bollixed up shot.
That’s enough finger wagging for now, time for a snifter of brandy.
