 Scared me!

Last night was an absolute corker, in Leitrim. So off I went, with my .22 Hornet and Clulite, for a stroll up the track. I basicly walked up to the road. Had a look on the other side and then set to slowly drifting back down to home again. I didn't have my Hi Vis vest on so obviously wasn't going to try walking along that road!

And, as I got a few yards down my track, I saw an absolute bloody search light! I mean, this thing was like anti aircraft! It was coming from the cross road running paralel to me, effectively checking out the far side of my own ground. But this must have been one of those f*ck off great hand held things the Dog boys favour ~ and those with Very high velocity rifles! Things like .243's. And that beam was creeping ever closer

Tell ye what; It f*ckin spoiled my little wander! I worked out these lads were in a pick up truck and scanning that quarter of my ground. That didn't bother me in the least. What Did bother me greatly was that I was standing there, in the dark and trying to figure out what colour my eyes might reflect back at them, should that deadly beam actually reach me and settle! Did I have anything on my clothing that might throw back a spot of white light? My arsehole was screwed down to a pin prick, I can tell ye!

As it happens, they turned my way, at the cross roads. And then, having obviously noticed my own nervous little flickers, simply switched off their own 500 yarder and drove on down the road above me and on their way.

So; Respect to some fellow Sportsmen there. And I guess, on looking back from the comfort of my chair, they would have long since seen my own flicker and had me marked. Still a bit scarey though, thinking what sort of fire power they must have had to follow that Huge beam!

Hi Vis at All times from now on then!

trying to figure out what colour my eyes might reflect back

i don`t think our eyes do reflect light back, not 100% sure, just i remember "being where i shouldn`t" one night and the land owner was scanning the fields looking for me, so i dived into the closest bush and just hid there, anyway he got about 50 yards away and put his lamp back on and started to scan again, i had my hand over the dogs eyes so he couldn`t pick them up, but i was looking straight at him, surely if our eyes reflected light back he would have seen them from that short of a distance.

ps. that was when i was young and stupid, poaching was my only option then.

Animals such as dogs, fox, cats and whatnot have a structure called a tapetum in the back of the eye which mirrors light back through the retina. It allows them to see much better in low light conditions than humans can.

This is you see when you lamp them.

Humans do not have a tapetum, so comparativly little light is reflected from our eyes.
