Anti's ask Gormley to deliver

Our new minster for the environment is coming under pressure to do as his party manifesto dictates, and ban all "bloodsport".

The irish variation of LACs or whatever they call themselves this week are going to stage a protest outside the Dail later today, to remind the minister of his previous stance and commitments.

That'll be one of the Greens that got their feet under the table, will it, mate?

You and I'll have to have a little discussion. I have the power of some sort of vote myself now, don't I? And so I'd like to start using it in the only way I've ever looked at voting; Single Issue stance. I'd like to vote Against what ever bunch of c***s it is runs Dublin right now. I'd also like to vote For who ever will leave us alone to get on with what we do in the sticks.

Couldn't vote in england, see? Labour? Nuff said! But the tories killed the Dogs. That left me with the SDP. And our local man, whilst a stunningly brilliant local MP, was a leading light in the LACS!

That's why I simply never bothered. Now the b*stards have me pissed here. I'll do what little I can then. Just point me in the right direction and 'our lot' will get my support.

As a British citizen resident in Ireland you have the right to vote in Dail elections, and most other elections other than constitutional referendums.
You should check to see that you are registered to vote, your local post office should be able to help you if you have not already done so.
As a matter of course, I would advise you to bookmark www.citizensinformation.ie, a site useful to everyone living here, citizen or otherwise.

As for who you should vote for, I would be loathe to influence you (ahem..) but generally Fine Gael & Fianna Fail used to be the safest bet.
Now that FF are in cahoots with the Greens I'm no longer happy with them. However, that said, they have in the past done a great job of ignoring the anti lobby, which is headed up in the Dail by one Tony Gregory, independant TD for Dublin central. Whether or not the Greens will be able to plough thier own furrow in goverment remains to be seen, but to date they have been strangely silent on a lot of things they used to hop up and down about while in opposition. Amazing what a dose of responsibility will do....

Fine Gael are another party that has no particular anti hunting stance. Indeed, the most of its support is in the countryside and Enda Kenny stood up at the last coursing meeting in Clonmel and stated he would not touch the sport. They are worth considering.

Labour has many anti's within, although it's current leader Pat Rabbitte has stated he has no issue with shooting and fishing. Mighty big of him..

Strangely enough, the Green party has no real opposition to shooting or fishing either, the TD for Carlow/Kilkenny Mary White has stated she is a keen shot and angler.
They are however, expressly anti hunting.
I did notice, as a by the way, that John Gormley's web page has been updated recently and the bit about his membership of the Irish council against blodsports (ICABS) has disappeared. Odd isn't it?

The Progressive Democrats have no stated position on hunting, but I do not believe they are anti in any way. I'm open to correction of course. They are currently in the doldrums after a disastrous election.

The rest is the usual mixture of socialists and independants.

So now you are as well informed as most care to be. I tend to keep an eye on politics, I take my vote and it's implications seriously, especially where it concerns our sports and traditions.

Cheers, mate. That's upped my understanding no end
