i'd assume it's dispatched by shooting it and then removing it from the hole,or if it's being let go then you could always lift it out by hand,or are yous scared

Forgive me mate. I got a bit tied up for a minute there .....
" Harcombe Method " ? Well; I aquired a set of real old Badger Tongs, see? I bought them as I suspected they were as once supplied by an old firm I have a nostalgic thing about. Only I wasn't certain and was trying to research them. Who better to ask, I thought, than Mr Badger Digger himself; Mr Harcombe.
Craic is, I asked him if he'd ever have seen the tongs supplied by this particular firm and if he could thus help me certify the veracity of my ones.
I don't think I've kept the reply. But it's ingrained in my mind anyway! His exact words were:
" Badger Tongs? What the bloody hell would we have wanted Tongs for anyway?! "
I don't believe he ever mentioned " Draw Dogs " in his famous book either?

Glad you like 'em This is their breeder. No they're not much used in the south as very few are the right size and temprement to go in, grab hold and back out. We are working on it though.

billybunter nice looking glens how long have u been working them?
red im using my lurcher for drawing. i suppose a draw dog to me is used when you've dug to the terrier (patterdale in my case) and yu u want to withdraw the quarry you would then drop in your draw dog. how would u define a draw dog red?

draw dogsNot always the case, dig to sounder, drop in draw dog, no, no ,no, no no,
Draw dog let in,settle down and listen on, draw dog pull out , sometimes rejuggle hold and finish.
Draw dog begins, draw dog ends, not typical brit terrier story, oh , why??? oh is Irish dog through and through..... oooooo you not believe it you looking in wrong places.

every one to their own
if the terrier has done his/her job correctly, there should be no need for such a thing as a "drawing dog"
what is a "drawing dog"? one that steals the glory off the brave little warrior that has been in the dark face to face combat with its chosen quarry, thats like watching two boxers going fist to fist for eleven rounds only for some one to jump in swing a punch and get the belt! please tell me you don`t think its right?
if this is your way i apologize, but it makes me think you dont have too much faith in your terriers, but who am i to judge? i just like to see my terriers work to the standards they are up too.

The terriers job is to dig the quarry mate IMO. For a terrier then to go on and draw the game and dispatch it quickly I think would cause the terrier to take punishment he does'nt need to. That's if he was capable of doing it, most quarry with the exception of small vixens are usualy much bigger than our average terrier sure it's the same thing diggin to the tyke then shooting the game. Drw dogs are a handy tool and if used properly are a valuable assett at a dig. Dogs have been traditionaly bred for drawing in Ireland for many years and dog trials only ceased here in the 70s though some men have continued to breed these strong dogs for their working capabitities and I have had the pleasure of watching some of these dogs work and believe me it is a sight to behold. They do their work as well the terrier does his work.

Some interesting replys there lads , draw dogs are handy on
certain digs ,depending on how game and educated the quarry is ,
theres a certain way of being able to break your terrier of and at the same time hold the game where it doesnt catch you . Then theres digs
where the only way of gettng to the quarry quickly at the end of a dig
is to drop a strong dog before the game throws a wall up ,which i have seen done .
ditch as for dave harcombe ! after meeting the man personally at
midlands game fair 3 years ago ,i was in the company of first class digging men ,one in particular done all of ken goulds digging as you know ken only has one arm ,i would take harcombes reply about a set of tongs with a pinch of salt , maybe he didnt know how to use them .After listening to his many tales we were actually in stitches of laughter knowing
that it was bullshit he was talking .
