I'd suggest 1/4" Marine Ply, mate. Made one myself, back in the day. Used something around the 1/4" Marine. Waterproof PVA and a few pins. Gave it a few coats of paint and off I went.

That was just a pretty much square box with a split lid. I put it together over two days - allowing the glue to dry over night - and painted it at my leasure. Shed door type hasp on each lid. Old seat belt and away I went. Used to sit on it all the time. Never let me or the ferrets down and weighed little.

These days though, forget seat belts. Get yeself a neoprene carry strap, like used for rifle and (Birders) telescope slings. They don't half absord the sense of weight and the jarring as ye walk about

And I'm the most kack handed wood butcher there is, by the way. Cut wood with a Chain Saw and beat nails with a stone, me. Split a bit of timber as soon as look at it. But a box? Even I managed that one.

greg, i use a plastic box made my falconry fabrications. ( http://www.falconfabrication.co.uk/ ) they are good sturdy boxes, easy to keep clean, really light and will last for years. the downside is, they cost about £40 including postage.
