Headed out on monday night to a farm, i used to do a lot of ferreting many years ago and always had good bags from the land, but since then the land has been use for cattle farming and this resulted in many of the ground warrens being filled in. making it more suitable for lamping.

Left home at 9pm, and after a stop at the garage was at the farm for 10.30. The Sky was clear, with a little wind. The first field of the night was a large steep hill. And as we give the field a quick scan We spied some cattle that were insistent on being a nuisance. And continued to follow us up to the next hedge, in spite of this we managed to get a slip, on a rabbit that was just down hill of us and it went round just out of my view.

So we crossed the hedge and the next field was one with a lot of little humps in it, at first it thought this would be the only problem encountered in this field. But i was wrong. As we walked up the hill again and there was a white cow at the top. Which started to buck and charge us only pulling up at the last second. this hampered any attempts at making a silent approach.

Next field was high cover, which I thought was strange for this time of year? we left that field after being stung and not seeing anything through the cover. So next field got one slip along the hedge but it give us the slip and made it to the hedge. Further along the hedge Sean spotted one squatting (well spotted) rolf was on it in a second or two, after a quick scuffle the rabbit was subdued and dispatched. We decided to carry on for a second rabbit and came to really thick hedge and a quick shine through it showed a squatter rite along the top of the hill so Sean asked me to stand in the gap while he climbed through. This was to stop me making any extra noise.

So Sean got though a gap in the hedge and i watched from my side of the hedge. Rolf dropped on to him and there was a scuffle. The rabbit did a summersault on midair and made its escape. That was the last flight of the night. We carried on a few fields with nothing out that was slip-able and fed the bird up of the rabbit we caught earlier. Called it a night with the one in the bag.
