after a wait of 6 months i finally got my hmr granted.picked it up friday evening.
out saturday morning to zero in and then off for a few bunnies.
cz 452 16" barrel with P/H moderator,nikko sterling 8 x 50 scope,Remington Premium Magnum ammo.
the two that are a little messy were taken at around 100 yrds,the other two were chest shot a little further out.
out again in the early evening,most of these were taken from resting on a post at 145 yrds while one was freestanding at 135
currently making a set of bi-pod shooting sticks al la varmint al so freestanding shots should be a no more.
early days yet but any rifle that makes me look like a marksman is a keeper

My mate has a CZ .17 HMR ~ I don't know the model ~ and he's simply become the God of Death with the thing! He sees a Gray? It's going to die! Sadly, we have no rabbits round here, so I envy the crap out of the numbers you obviously have available. What the .17 HMR was made for, surely?
Myself, I currently have a .22 Hornet. But I've been lurking in gun shops and talking to people. I've fallen in love with light, black synthetic things. Diamond etched receivers and fluted barrels in matt steel? Oh cum onnn! Beholding such beauty Can take a toll on a mans ability to sneer and resist!
Now we're both looking at .17 Remmington. The .17 round launched by a .223 type casing. Centre fire. Disgustingly accurate out to ridiculous ranges. And the fox drops. Period!
Well; Saying that? Mate was talking to a guy the other day who had a fox pestering him. He spotted it but decided the range was a bit sticky for his own Hornet. He brought out the dread .17 Remmi.
Must have rushed the shot and fired a little too low and far to one side on the frontal chest shot. BT. Fox ran away.
Like ye do, the guy moseyed on down to where the fox had been. Just to look around.
He found Charlie's front leg laying there. Said ye couldn't have taken it off more cleanly with a razor! Holy F*ck!!!

the round is a BT mate,God of Death these things make it too easy mate.those rabbits were taken from two fields side by side.the parker hales not the best moderator by any means but it does the job,the free standing shot needed three goes and the bloody thing sat there unconcerned before it departed.
not too savvy where centrefires are concerned but that 17 remmy sounds the ticket.....is it expensive?
three legged fox should be easy spotted next time

That one's got a lot of wood on it and an extremely heavy barrel. Whole gun weighs a ton. I wouldn't want it. What I'd like is a black synth A Bolt. Fluted barrel, perhaps in satin stainless, and a diamond cut receiver

Ditch is the .17 remmy the same as the .17 fireball that i keep seeing reference to on the yank forums?

" .17 Fireball " ? I honestly just don't know, mate. I'm sure I too have seen that name mentioned.
Bland fact of it is; I'm not a veteran rifle holder. Never had one before my .22 Hornet and bought that just because it sounded about right for my needs, preferences and location. Which it basically fits pretty well. But the actual, physical object of the rifle itself leaves some to be desired with me, as a person.
So, I decided to look into changing. Frankly, I'd be perfectly happy with another Hornet, calibre wise. Just that I'd like one in black synth etc. and weighing a hell of a lot less. They don't exist.
So now I'm digging round, 'phoning friends' and trying to find a similarly suitable calibre which Does exist in the gorgeous forms I've handled other cal's in.
My absolute ideal then would be a Browning A Bolt 'Stalker', in .22 Hornet or .17 Rem. No such Now I'm looking at the .222.
I feel I might be looking a whole while yet. Have ye noticed how ye can go to a gun shop, handle the rifle of ye dreams - eg. a Browning. Yet, when ye look on their site for that same rifle, in that style and calibre? It's not even f*cking mentioned?!
One of these days, maybe I'll just walk into a shop, find The Rifle and slap a deposit on it. Sod the rest! It's giving me a headache.

i hear ya,the hmr is my first also.when i had my visit from the FO he recomended the .222 but i was after a long range rabbit gun that could handle a fox that happened to present himself....i made the right choice.
remington do the .17 in synthetic not a fluted barrel though,i believe the cz 527 can also be had in the .22 centrefires with synthetic.
not specifically what you're after but options maybe?
