the perfect morning?this morning we left the house and it was a cold frosty morning with perfect blue sky. these mornings are my favorite and come the middle of summer i find myself yarning for these cold winter mornings.
was optomisitc this morning and i couldnt wait to get going. we arrived at the farm and decided to start with a warren, that runs along the boundary off the first field. so i started off by finding a gap in the hedge and i ran the Longnet through it. and netted up one side of the hedge. while tommy and ryan netted up the other side.
after a few minutes we collared up the ferrets and entered them. the rabbits bolted well and everything was textbook. a few slipped the nets and escaped but they there for another day (you cant catch them all)
after a half hour the bolting had slowed down. so we got the locator out and pin pointed the mark after a short dig of 1 foot i was in with the rabbit being spitroasted by the ferrets. this warren produced 4 good healthy rabbits.
we moved on to another warren along a very thick hedge but the rabbits refused to bolt from this one. after 10 minutes a ferret came from the hole and i got the locator and found the mark after a short dig this produced a rabbit that was coverd in fleas and had the signs of Myxi. this to see is a ferreters night mare. we decided best to dispose of this rabbit onsite to prevent the spead of the virus.
the next warren was beneath an overhead pylon. this was to be the downfall for the day. we entered both ferrets and one came out after a few minutes the other was a no show. and the locators decided they didnt like power lines. so was down to the old fashoned method of ferreting using a t bar to find the tube the rabbit was in and then move along doing hte same till u find a close mark to the rabbit and ferret after a few digs. i dug in rite on top of the rabbit but no ferret after a few minuts she appeared at the hole i had just dug, but without her locator collar. and with no way of finding out where the collar was. checked the hole and the nets but with no joy

Lads; I've never had anything to do with those boxes. But I know they're how people do it these days. I'm just wondering; Is it widely known, or even mentioned in their instructions, that pylons can knock them out like that?
I mean, quite frankly, having just read that? F*cked if I'd be hanging about doing Any form of ferreting - or anything else - under a damn pylon!
How about these Mobile Phone Transmitter Masts ....?

it isnt mentioned in the instructions and i have even sent mine back to deben, and they confirmed my box isnt faulty. mine dont like the phone masts either it can be a really pain when it decides to pack up.
altho i wouldnt go with out one tbh, when they work their worth their weight in gold IMO but when the fail they leave many of us scratching our heads wondering how they did it before the locator was invented.

We did it, Kev'. We called it " Ferreting " 
Anyway, now ye've REALLY scared the pants off me, mate! It was a power carrying pole?!? Shit!
Tell ye a little secret? There's one of those in a field out there. It overlooks a well used run. I've been harbouring this pipe dream about getting and setting me a High Seat on that pole and sitting in it half the night with my rifle!
Think I'll scrub round That idea then!

kev, try testing your collars everytime u go to put them down. this way you know if the battries are done, or if you cant pick up a signal

yeah i done the ferreting with no locator myself round the belfast hills, when i couldnt afford a locator, its just when you become used to using them, u start to rely on them that bit to much.
sean i do change collars very often, and the batterys had just be put into the collars one set previous, ive had this problem before with powerlines and recievers.
